- Facing lockdown restrictions, lack of social interaction and access, and heightened economic challenges are all affecting people's mental health and their access to relevant care.A recent survey by Ipsos in seven countries, commissioned by the International Committee of the Red Cross, reveals that people around the world experience growing psychological distress. The survey made the following key findings: 51% of adult respondents believe that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on their mental health.Across seven countries, almost two-thirds of respondents believe that ensuring both physical and mental health is more important now than it was before the COVID-19 crisis.Nearly three-quarters of those surveyed believe that frontline workers and first responders responding to the COVID-19 outbreak need mental health support more than the general public.Since the start of the pandemic, the ICRC has received an increasing number of requests for support from frontline responders around the world, including medical staff, volunteers, teachers, social workers, body collectors, community leaders and many others on a constant basis. People who work hard to support others. The difficulties associated with their job responsibilities exacerbate their own concerns and needs on an individual and societal level. The mental health and wellbeing of these rescuers must be supported; this ensures that they can continue to assist others appropriately.Mental health support must be integrated into the first wave of humanitarian emergency response operations, including the outbreak response, as an integral part of emergency response systems at home and abroad. States and key stakeholders should commit to investing in funding, personnel, facilities and personal protective equipment, and integrating mental health and psychosocial support into national health strategies to ensure that needs are adequately met without delay.
